Data-driven vs. data-informed

Quantitative data tells you WHAT is or isn’t happening. Qualitative data helps you better understand WHY it is or isn’t happening. As the diagram shows, it’s not about any particular extreme but rather a balance along with your gut feeling. The best product designers find that balance between all of the inputs they have, and create clear, compelling experiences through the fog of data and insights.

Let’s look at what makes up each circle.
Data

Data on its own is pretty much useless, I would even argue that results from A/B tests on their own only give directional information. You need the insights from data to create meaningful product experiences, so an amazing product analyst is a must. Data can be anything from conversion, engagement, time spent in product, feature usage, net promoter scores (NPS) and so on. Whenever you are designing an experience you need to ensure you know what data point you are optimising for and if it is a leading or trailing metric. You should only try to optimise for one metric, but you should also monitor other secondary metrics in your product. Again, the key is getting customer insights from your data.

Internally at Atlassian, we get a bunch of data, one of these sources is NPS. On its own the score is interesting, especially when tracked over time but not particularly useful. We go a step further and break this down into a framework called RUF:

R = reliability

U = usability/design

F = functionality.

By breaking it down we can get insights from different customer segments on different pages within our products on how they score the performance, usability and if we have the right functionality/features. This allows us to see the major areas that customers have problems with within our products from a quantitative point of view.

Data provides the “what”.
Empathy

You have to build up and spread the empathy within your organisation for the problems your customer is having. Empathy can be built up by reading NPS feedback quotes, interviewing customers, surveys and more traditional ethnographic research methods, like contextual inquiries or usability testing. Again though, that empathy is useless without meaningful insights.

When we redesigned our onboarding experiences, we had a comprehensive experimentation program running. But in parallel we also ran diary studies and usability testing sessions. The diary studies really helped us understand our customers’ pain points and motivations. From these insights we built a conceptual model for onboarding. That model gave our experimentation program a clear framework to work towards.

Empathy provides the “why”.
Gut feeling / intuition

There is a great quote from Julie Zhuo, the Facebook product design director:

Data and A/B test are valuable allies, and they help us understand and grow and optimize, but they’re not a replacement for clear-headed, strong decision-making. Don’t become dependent on their allure. Sometimes, a little instinct goes a long way.

And it is very, very true. No amount of data or empathy will remove the fact that you need to essentially make decisions on how to interpret those customer insights. I mentioned earlier how we used our design intuition to stay the path with a failed experience. Intuition and gut feeling is not voodoo, it is built up over time through experience, by making decisions, by making mistakes and by learning along your own career journey. As a designer it is your responsibility to incorporate all of the available data points and create compelling customer experiences. Data or research will not replace the fact that you have to make decisions.

Intuition provides the “how”.
Pulling it all together

The danger in any product design environment is that you rely on one part of the process too heavily and end up optimising for the wrong thing. Basing a product decision solely on a data point like “conversion” is not wise. Basing a product decision on a couple of customer interviews is also not wise. Basing a product decision on your intuition could get you into a lot of trouble. Just because your conversion may have increased, it doesn’t mean you won’t frustrate millions of people and in the longer term be worse off. So finding that balance is crucial.

I have spoken with many designers who feel that data is removing their creative license. Of course the famous 41 shades of blue example at Googlefrom a few years ago is a case in point of going too far to one extreme. But if you look at Google’s progress with material design, which I am sure they will have experimented on as well, you can see how well they are now striking the balance.

As a designer I embrace the power that quantitative data and experimentation adds to my design process. It is a great complement to more traditional qualitative data, and in no way does it replace it or diminish the impact I can have.

Good product design comes from striking the right balance between data, empathy and intuition. You need patience and persistence, an understanding of the feedback you get from data and research, and a gut feel of what is right or wrong. Data should not paralyse any designer or remove their creative freedom. Understand that neither one of these inputs will tell us what to design and build.

Data-driven vs. data-informed design in enterprise products

Imagine a world where we’d know the impact that an experience would have before we shipped it.

This is not as impossible as it sounds, and most product companies are or have been building experiences this way for a few years now. Popularised by ecommerce sites and lean startups, validating design decisions by A/B testing and hard data is commonplace nowadays. But trying to apply some of these techniques to enterprise software can be much harder. There is a great article on UX mag debunking the 6 myths of data driven design. It’s an awesome read, but I would go a step further, and say that we need to move away from data-driven design and into a world of data-informed design.
Data-driven vs. data-informed

Data-driven design looks to ship fast, optimise at every step and let the data drive many of the design decisions. Often (but not always) it is possible to get large percentage improvements with small tweaks as pages have similar and standardised layouts, or a startup only has a few features to optimise for and one specific type of customer to speak to.

However, this way of working can be much harder to execute when you work in a complex product environment, with many features, experiences and types of customers to optimise for. Continuously shipping experiments may not be the right way to work when millions of customers rely on your products to get their work done, as is the case at Atlassian. But how do you keep trying to optimise and learn, whilst retaining a well thought-through design approach? I believe there’s a slightly different approach which I’m terming “data-informed design”. Here’s an internal Atlassian example of being data-informed, instead of data-driven.

We shipped an experiment to improve our onboarding experience for new customers. From a data perspective the result was a huge failure. It resulted in -12% engagement (time spent in product) and neutral conversion. So did we throw it away and move to something else? No, the team believed in the experiment we had designed and our qualitative research was telling us that we were on the right track. Our conviction turned out to be correct. We took some lessons from the data, applied some insights from our qualitative research, iterated on the experiment, and with tweaks to the design it became a success at +22% conversion, with engagement staying neutral.

This is being data-informed, not data-driven. We used the data we had and combined it with qualitative feedback and our design intuition to produce an iteration that was ultimately successful. We weren’t binary, we didn’t throw it away completely at the first sign of trouble.

A lot of work went into the project, and we all thought it was clearly better; our users agreed in qualitative user studies. Despite this, we wanted to evaluate the new design quantitatively with an experiment.

From the very beginning, we have been travelling by car. We had 25 years old Renault that surprised everybody who meets us. From year to year, it broke more and more often. I remember our last journey by Renault very well, even now when I write about this car I feel sadness – this car means a lot for me, it opens a world of travelling, marvellous places and desire to investigate more and more.

We went to Switzerland – country with many mountains. Our Renault was too old to ride those roads. Every half an hour we had to stop and cool the engine. When we finally reached the Dixence Dam – tallest gravity dam in the world we sighed with relief. But after the very interesting excursion inside the Dam and walking around in the area with marvellous views, our car refused to wind up. We didn’t know what to do and it was almost evening, so we decided to spend time in the mountains in the car and solve the problem in the morning.

Of course we were nervous how we will continue travelling on such car, but in the morning we solved the problem (I didn’t want to go into details here as I didn’t understand what was wrong, my friend took two wirings and joined them and after this car started 🙂 But after that trip we decided that we need new car… Now we have Logan MCV where we could sleep and carry a lot of things.

I got used to travelling by car a lot and it was very hard for me to dare to travel without it. But after we did it I realized that travelling without car differs a lot, but had many advantages. This article is about advantages of travelling by car, so let’s start!

You are free to decide when and where to goThere is no need to hurry up for train or bus. You could wake up whenever you want and drive as much as you want.
Your travel needs much less planningOur last trips by car were lack of planning. All we made at home was gathering the places of interest that we want to visit. We made planning only several days in advance and only if we wanted to book the hotel. It gives you the feeling of freedom to stay longer if you like the place and leave earlier if you don’t.

Instead, I prepared for our trip to India for hours and hours. We booked every hotel, bought all tickets for trains and buses, planned every day in details. It is really very time demanding. I remembered it took several months for us to plan that trip carefully.

Also travelling by car allows you to cook the food by yourself as you may bring oven and live in campsites. There is no need to go to expensive restaurants; you may cook delicious grilled vegetables and sausages instead!
You may spend less money for accommodationWhen travelling by car you may live in campsites (if you travel in Europe, USA, Australia or some countries in South America). Campsites are at least half much cheaper that the cheapest hotel. If you still want to live in the hotels you may choose cheaper ones (but not worse!) on the country sides.
If the weather is nice, campsite is even better than hotel. Do you want to live with sea view under the pine trees?

The only problem with car occurred when you want to visit big city. First of all it is usually problem to park the car, and secondly, if you want to spend the time in that city you will probably want to stay in the hotel in the center of the city where parking places are very expensive and limited.

We usually check carefully whether hotel had the parking places if book in the city center. Sometimes we stayed not in the very center but somewhere near the metro station for example.

Car allows you to visit as much places of interest as you want and wherever you want. You will spend much less money to visit all you want by car than by public transport.
You may take much more things with youWhen we go travelling by car we take everything we might need. We take our small refrigerator and we have cold beer whenever we want. My friend installed solar battery on the roof of our car – so we could charge laptops and mobile phones if it is sunny, even if we don’t drive the car.

We bring electric oven to cook and all utensils we might need for cooking. By the way, oven warmed us many times. In Iceland we lived in tent and heat inside with oven. In our latest journey we lived in the very-very cold room in the hotel in Bulgaria (it was already cold outside but the heating season has not started yet- so we used our oven to heat the room.

We also take our roller-skates and clothes for mountains trekking.
You feel much more safer in the carIt may occur than your travelling turns off to the unsafe places with stray dogs or unfriendly people. It was several times when I was really glad to be inside the car.

By the way this was one of the main reasons why we rent a car when we first visited Thailand. That was probably our mistake, but I felt much calmer when think about exploring Asia by car for the first time.

Frankly speaking I was afraid of traveling without car in those days and also I was afraid of Asia too. I am so glad that now I change my mind about both of that aspect, however car gives you the feeling of security.

If traveling domestically, another option fo getting insurance on your electronic goods is to contact your home contents insurer and see if you can get them insured as portable valuable goods.
14. Cancellation Policy

It’s no fun if you fall ill before you leave and can’t go on your trip. Many unexpected problems can pop up. Not all insurance policies cover cancellation of flights and accommodation, so please read the policy wording relevant to you carefully.
15. Pay attention to Government Warnings

Many travel insurance policies will have a clause where they won’t cover you if you travel to a country your government has warned you against traveling to. The insurer can argue that the risk was foreseen and you were warned.

We’ve always purchased international travel insurance, but we never used to purchase domestic travel insurance in Australia.

We have socialized medicine in Australia so we always thought we’d be okay, and in regards to our luggage and equipment we just ran the risk.

That was until we did a quad bike tour near Newcastle and the guide explained to us what could happen if you had an accident. The only rescue would be a helicopter, which if you did not have health or travel insurance would cost around $25,000.

It is completely up to you. You can get policies that can fit in with your health and home insurance so you pay for only what you need.
6. Annual policy or single trip cover?

When searching for the best travel insurance policy you should have a basic idea of your travel habits and plans in advance in order to choose the right policy.

If you know you are going to travel several times within in a year, an annual travel insurance policy (multi-trip policy) covers all your trips and can be far more cost effective – they do have a maximum duration per trip though!

Other wise, stick with a single trip travel insurance policy!

NOTE:

Insurance premiums are based on the oldest traveler, and when a traveler turns 65 they hike up premiums.

Think carefully before opting for an annual policy for you or the family. If at least one of the travelers is 65 a separate policy for the older traveler may be the best option to avoid everyone else paying over the odds – but still do your calculations.

The deductible is the amount of money you pay for expenses before your insurance plan starts to pay. The higher your deductible, the lower your premium will be!

So if a claim is needed, you will be paying much more. If no claim is needed then you win as your upfront premium cost is lower.

If you take out a low deductible then your premium will be higher, meaning your upfront costs are more but you will end up paying less if you have to make a claim.

My comfort level is usually around $100 of deductible/excess. Depending on the travel circumstances though and premium price I will sometimes go for no deductible/excess.
8. How to Reduce Travel Insurance Premiums

A few tips on ways you may be able to reduce your premiums:
Check Your Home Insurance Policy

If traveling domestically, often home insurance policies may include coverage for personal belongings outside your home. This will help you save on travel insurance costs.
Buy Direct and Online

When buying the best travel insurance, it tends to be cheaper online and direct through an insurance provider.

Travel agents and airlines can get staggeringly large commissions from insurers for selling policies, sometimes up to 50%. Do your research just in case you discover an anomaly.
Traveling in a Group

If you are traveling in a group for business or leisure, you could save by purchasing one group policy instead of one policy for each individual.
Customer Loyalty

Check your other insurance providers, e.g. car and house as you could get a discount for a travel policy since you are already a customer.

Remember our Golden Rule, if you don’t ask the answer is always no. You can always highlight their competitor who charges less for the same coverage.
Family Travel Insurance

For families, some of the best travel insurance policies will cover kids for free, like World 2 Cover for Australians.
Credit Cards

Travel cover is a common add-on with select credit cards. Read the fine print and contact your bank to check for details. Obtain written confirmation that you are covered, what the insurance covers, and who to contact in an emergency.

Keep in mind:

Credit card travel insurance may not provide medical or evacuation coverage
You may have to pay for a higher level credit card in order to get insurance benefits
Restrictions on what is covered and the limits
You have to pay for the flights or other travel related expenses using that credit card in order to get covered!

Also, many basic policies cannot be activated without producing a copy of your credit card and do not cover any business or sporting activities, such as rafting.

And it’s not uncommon for the insurance to only last three months and once overseas, coverage cannot be extended. Personally, I would rely on credit card travel insurance.
9. Cheap Travel Insurance

A quick word about cheap travel insurance policies.

Getting the cheapest travel insurance policy is not always the best strategy. This could cost you a lot more in the long run if you do not get the right policy for yourself.

Travel insurance companies care about reducing their expenses (i.e their payout to you). The best travel insurance policies and companies provide good coverage and will work with you to give you the best experience possible.

But, there are a few dodgy ones also!

I know. I don’t like having to buy travel insurance either.

And I don’t even like talking about it or having to do research and compare the best travel insurance companies.

It’s never an exciting topic, I’d much rather just talk about planning a trip with my kids and grandparents.
And when you think about it, paying for a travel insurance premium is one of those things you pay for in the hopes you never need to use it.

But you are here now, and before I get into my tips for buying the best travel insurance policy, let me just say this,

“If you can’t afford travel insurance, then you can’t afford to travel”.

It’s that simple.

Let’s face it. You don’t hesitate at purchasing car insurance when you buy a car, or house and contents insurance when you buy a home. So why not travel insurance??

Honestly, buying travel insurance can be so cheap it’s a no-brainer. Peace of mind is priceless!

I would much rather spend an extra $100 or so for our trip and most likely never use the insurance than wipe out my bank account if something did happen.

Call it what you like – vacation insurance, trip insurance or holiday insurance, not having insurance is not worth the risk. Anything can, will, and sometimes goes wrong. If it does and you are not insured, you can be up for a lot of money AND inconvenience.
Why you should buy travel insurance

Imagine this.

The excitement of your travel departure date is just around the corner, you’ve saved up all your hard earned money, paid for your flights and accommodation, tours are booked, clothes are packed, and your spending money is just waiting to be spent.

What happens if:

You need to cancel your trip unexpectedly
A hurricane damages your destination
There is a terrorist event
You get sick or injured on your trip
Your luggage is lost or stolen

(i) The UNESCO Fellowship application form duly completed in duplicate. Two recent photographs (obligatory) should be included with the form.

(iii) A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the candidate’s work.

A detailed description, one to two page(s) (maximum), in either English or French, of the research work for which the candidature is being put forward. The research proposal should cover the following points:

Why? The concrete nature of the proposed project’s contribution to the fields listed in paragraph D.1 above; its innovative, original aspects; and the scope and purpose of the research project. The candidate should demonstrate the reasons the theoretical and practical knowledge or training acquired at the host institution would be beneficial to her/his on-going research project.
What? The expected results or impact of the research project being undertaken.
How? Describe the proposed arrangements for conducting the research.

Eligibility for the Scholarship:

Eligible Countries: The scholarship is available for the citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland.
Entrance Requirements: To be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must meet the following two criteria:

You are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, hence required to pay a tuition fee
You have completed the application to Master’s in Management ranked it as your number one choice, and paid the application fee
. Applicants with the first degree from a recognized university and academically talented, disadvantaged based on the criteria of disability, socioeconomic status, and are not engaged at work at all or have been engaged at work but couldn’t able to cover their study expenses will be eligible for the scholarship.
Have financial difficulty to finance graduate university education and,
Have leadership/community giveback experience or potential.

English Language Requirements: If English is not your first language then you will need to show that your English language skills are at a high enough level to succeed in your studies.
